SCUBA regulations

Diving is strictly regulated and use of Gump Station equipment and related facilities for SCUBA is only allowed for scientific purposes.

UC Enterprise Dive and Boat Safety Program provides oversight and support for all scientific diving and boating operations at Gump Station. The procedures below are being updated. Users should consult with Jim Hayward, Gump Station's Dive & Boat Safety Officer (Contact information).

Anyone wanting to dive while based at the Gump Station, or use any diving related equipment, must obtain prior clearance from the Gump Station's DSO Jim Hayward.

This clearance should be obtained in writing BEFORE arrival at the Gump Station.

The Station does not provide personal dive gear (mask, snorkel, fins, wet suit, etc.), which users must bring for themselves.  Available SCUBA Equipment includes:

  • SCUBA compressor and tanks
  • Lead
  • Oxygen
  • Safety flags

Larger groups should contact the Station to ensure that sufficient tanks and lead are available.
